So that was a quiet week again. No wait, that was last week. This week had to make up so it was super exciting. The soap continues! Note that I’m writing this blog post semi-drunk. Might influence a few things ;) Let’s get started.
Sooo, basically the week started with the leak of the internal google (dash/) dart strategy mail. Seriously, how that _10 month old_ email got leaked like that is beyond me, but it caused quite some movement in our dear community. I wrote a blog post about it too, but I was certainly not the only one. Some blog posts I picked up the past week: [1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12] Wow. Don’t get your panties in a bunch! I find it really interesting to see how the community responds to the leak of a 10 month old _internal_ email about Dart, promising things in timeframes that have passed months ago, but didn’t happen. I guess we’ll have to wait and see for the GOTO announcement. Before that I’m sure it’ll be talk of the day at the various js related confs ;) And please, let’s just not speculate until there’s a formal public announcement about this?
Dart was certainly not the only thing that kept us busy this week. Some followup news on the whole mobile OS stories. First word came that Samsung is NOT buying MeeGo after all… Well, ok. But you better decide faste because it turns out HTC is also on the hunt for a mobile OS. But HTC will think it through thoroughly. I guess that doesn’t look too good for Android. Luckily, there might be more hunters on the prowl for WebOS…
Enough about mobile OS, did we forget about Yahoo’s new strategy? It seems that they are in talks with AOL. Although that was the last I heard of the whole thing. I guess it was not as hot in the whole soap of the web kind of thing.
The week kind of took a turn when microsoft released a Windows 8 developer build download. That’s a first, like that. But it seems to be received with praise, and that’s not surprising. In Windows 8 you actually use web technology to create apps! So all you JavaScript developers were just turned in Win8 developers. Here’s some example code, if you need more persuasion. Oh and they also announced they won’t be supporting plugins anymore… I’m sure the silverlight community will be thrilled to hear about that. Oh, wait. Somewhat related, they also released a new IE10 “platform preview” (just call it beta already). Be sure to check out the ie10 dev guide! It seems you need win8 installed for IE10 though, but whatever, right? Personally, I’m just waiting for Microsoft to tell the world how it’s running on Node.JS now. But maybe that’s a bridge to far ;) (Mainly because node runs on v8, a Google engine). But who knows!
Finally Google finally released a public API for Google Plus. Although API is a big word because it’s seriously limited. But it’s all part of their careful deployment strategy.
Let’s take a look at some interesting posts in our own community… Saw an interesting swarm demo pass by. Made me wonder why such people aren’t posting this stuff on their own blog as part of their portfolio… Really, this is all you need to show them to “get hired”. Adobe actually released a very nice html5 demo. Alphapunch generates the script you need to click through transparent images. Aardwolf is a new mobile remote debugger. Oh and if you had problems running webgl demo’s, maybe give this webgl implementation in canvas a shot. Might not be as fast, but at least it should work.
